We are an independent opticians in Stoke Newington and have recently set up a fully equipped in-house optical laboratory. We are now looking for a reliable, self-motivated, and highly experienced Optical Lab Technician to support our on-site glazing service, including same-day spectacle collection where possible.

Job summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Optical Lab Technician to join our professional optical services team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the precise manufacturing, glazing, finishing, and quality control of prescription eyewear using advanced optical laboratory equipment and industry‑standard processes. This is a technical, skilled role requiring accuracy, problem‑solving ability, and strong understanding of optical production standards.

Key Requirements

· Strong ability to interpret optical prescriptions accurately.

· Skilled in operating optical laboratory machinery, including edgers, blockers, tracers, and surfacing equipment.

· Proven experience in cutting, edging, glazing, and fitting lenses to a high technical standard.

· Ability to perform lens surfacing, polishing, beveling, tinting, and finishing.

· Strong understanding of lens materials, coatings, and optical manufacturing processes.

· High level of manual dexterity, precision, and attention to detail.

· Ability to identify and resolve technical issues, including lens defects and fitting problems.

· Competence in quality control procedures and compliance with optical standards.

· Ability to maintain accurate production records and job documentation.

· Strong organisational skills and ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced laboratory environment.

Applicants must meet one of the following:

Preferred Route

  • Degree‑level education in Optical Science, Vision Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in an optical laboratory or similar technical environment.

Experience‑Based Route

  • Minimum 5 years’ full‑time experience as an Optical Lab Technician without a degree, demonstrating advanced technical capability.

· Must be proficient in English (written and spoken) for interpreting prescriptions, safety instructions, and technical documentation.

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a technical laboratory team.

· Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to meet production deadlines.

· Demonstrated commitment to health & safety, equipment care, and maintaining high laboratory hygiene standards.

· Understanding of LOTO (Lock‑Out/Tag‑Out) procedures, quality control protocols, and safe operation of optical laboratory machinery.
